Summer is right around the corner, and that means it is time to start thinking about summer travel courses. One to consider is CCI’s travel course to London, CCI 333: CCI and International Contexts, which will be led by Creative and Cultural Industries Director Dr. Patrick Fuery and Associate Professor of Film Studies, Dr. Kelli Fuery. The 3-credit course will run from June 13-22, 2022 and can count as a CCI elective or possible equivalent for a core requirement.

Students will visit one of the most dynamic international cities in visiting London, and will be exploring the multiple intersections of culture, creativity, and industry within the specific context of the city. Activities may include tours of heritage and historic sites, as well as visits to cultural institutions such as fashion houses, sports stadiums, media companies, and tourist sites. The class will emphasize the relationship between the visual and cultural aspects of the city’s identity, encouraging students to explore their specific CCI interests.

“We are keen to make the course very much about the student’s own CCI interests, so there will be lots of opportunity to explore those fields that intrigue them. I would be happy to work with students to try to make contacts with CCI places that they are interested in researching and visiting,” said Director Fuery.

And that those interests can be wide and varied as Dr. Fuery learned when he Co-taught the first CCI travel course during Interterm of 2020. “It revealed some of the things that we’re recognizing with CCI already, which is one of its biggest strengths, is the diversity of our students,” he said. “We have a full spectrum, basically with students from almost every college [at Chapman], and that makes it a wonderful melting pot of different perspectives.”

Of course the diverse makeup of the CCI minor’s student body, coupled with the ability to shape the course by honing in on one’s specific interests, makes CCI 333 a very popular choice. “Numbers are limited so we would urge you to act quickly if you are interested in taking the class. This is especially the case if you are thinking of applying with friends as the course is open to non-CCI students as well,” Director Fuery cautioned.

And finally, for more information about the specifics of CCI 333, Dr. Fuery said, “Please do reach out to me if this appeals or if you have any questions about the course, there is also the possibility of some additional financial support for students that are registered CCI minors.” In closing, he added to potential CCI 333 students, “I hope to see you in the best city in the world and to watch you be as disruptive to British culture as you possibly can be. The class will be considered a success, in my eyes, if Londoners in years to come talk about those unforgettable Americans who came in 2022! Cheers!”
