Student Spotlight: Maddycin Mamasig '28
Panthers! We are back with a beloved series here on the CCI Collective: Student Spotlights. At Chapman, the opportunities to explore any subject or interest are limitless. From the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts to Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, students are able to explore programs that complement their many personal interests. This week, for our first spotlight this year, we are featuring Maddycin Mamasing ‘28!

Maddy is currently a junior here at Chapman, and she is a Public Relations, Advertising, and Entertainment Marketing major and a CCI minor. As a third-year, Maddy has been well acclimated to the Chapman culture, and we learned more about her journey and her experience as a CCI minor. Check out her interview below!
What made you interested in CCI?
“I’ve always been interested in the CCI’s, most of my creativity stemming from being a dancer since 3 years old. Also, as a Filipino-American who was born and raised in Hawaii, I’ve always been a proud advocate for culture and its place in creative industries. When my friend, Ashley, told me about CCI, I was immediately interested because of how multi-faceted the program is, and how it allows you explore such a wide array of creative fields and their intersections.”
How are you integrating CCI within your major?
“As a PR, Advertising, and Entertainment Marketing major, what I learn in CCI is heavily applicable to that of my PR + Ad classes in the sense that I’ve learned the importance of developing critical understandings of how creative industries are connected and influence each other. Storytelling is at the root of marketing, but to effectively tell a story, it’s important to understand the contexts that influence how audiences will connect with it.”
How did you find the CCI minor and what are your thoughts on it as a major?
“I discovered the CCI minor through my friend, Ashley, who is also a PR, Advertising, and Entertainment Marketing major! While I am not in the CCI major, I am definitely excited to see its growth as an interdisciplinary program. There is always so much to explore when it comes to the CCI’s and analyzing how different parts of the CCI’s interact with and influence one another.”
What specific CCI industry are you most interested in/passionate about and why?

“Music has always been such an integral part of my life, whether that be in the dance studio, my walk to school, or simple moments at home like listening to my parents blast island reggae while cooking dinner. Today, my passion for music manifests in the plethora of live music events that I go to, one of the most recent ones being Niteharts! I believe that music has so much power, not only as a tool for artistic expression and accompanying visual media, but ultimately uniting people. I think that festivals and festival culture are such beautiful manifestations of how the music industry can unite audiences as communities.”
Are you working on any specific projects or hobbies that relate to CCI that you would like to share?

“Currently, I am doing social media for my roommate’s junior AP, Nandito Ako!
[*The AP is Dodge College’s Advanced Production film project led by upperclassman students. Students in the film program form crews composed of directors, cinematographers, editors, writers, etc., to create a professional, structured film. The AP that Maddy is a part of is “Nandito Ako”, which translates to “I’m here” in Tagalog. This is a Filipino-inspired story that is coming-of-age, following a romance and familial relationships.]

It’s my first time doing marketing for a film, considering that most of my background in social media management is in the food and restaurant industry with Jolene’s Hawaii, a small family-owned restaurant chain back home— however, I am really excited to be on the team, especially for a project that speaks to my personal heritage as a Filipina!”
A special thank you to Maddy for joining us on this week’s student spotlight! The CCI program here at Chapman may seem broad to some, but that is what makes it so accessible and made for everyone; because there are various industries, students are able to explore and learn about different sectors of the CCIs that they didn’t know could be interconnected. Being part of the CCI program gives students the opportunity not only to express their creative side but also to see how it works alongside culture, how it is integrated into representation, social conversations, and our everyday world and interactions.
It was exciting to learn about Maddy’s personal passion for music, as well as to see how she is applying techniques and theory she is learning through her CCI minor, and curricular concepts from her major to a real-world project like developing a film media campaign. It is a good reminder of how the Creative and Cultural Industries are at the cross sections of so many areas of interest for our students.
