As winter gives way to spring, we will soon find ourselves embraced by the charm of Valentine's Day, a delightful holiday nestled in between the changing of the seasons. Valentine’s Day used to be only celebrated by mainstream coupledom, but these days it serves as a reminder that love has many forms and there can be a myriad of ways to celebrate it as such. You can see celebrations of romance, friendships, pets, self, and for some, the shared love of hating Valentine's day. Even still, you can't help but feel the love as you pass elaborate chocolate displays and pink-themed storefronts, friends and couples alike getting ready for a night out on the town or to simply watch the latest romantic comedy.
Regardless of your preference on how to spend February 14th, it is always interesting to note and acknowledge how various creative industries utilize the day. Take the music sector for instance which innovatively unites people through platforms like Spotify. Now, you and your partner can curate a Spotify Blend Playlist, intertwining your musical tastes and even getting compatibility scores based on your preferences! In the realm of fashion, February sees independent and large retail shops adorn storefronts with splashes of pink, red hearts and specialty displays. Some major fashion and jewelry designers create specialty collections, such as Kate Spade's 2024 Love Collection and Swarovski's Wonder of Love. The film industry is no stranger to Valentine's Day celebrations. In addition to the slew of romantic comedies released this time of year, some cinemas, theaters and streaming services are organizing showcases where they offer a curated selection of movies around a theme such as love & romance.
As you can see Valentine's Day has a significant impact on creative economies, and as ardent students of CCI, we thought it would be fun to point out some creative ways to celebrate the day.
The Drive-in Experience!
The drive-in! An age-old yet seemingly new approach to enjoying movies, all from the cozy appeal of your car. The concept dates all the way back to 1933 when Richard Hollingshead, driven by a creative mission, devised a solution for his mother. According to the New York Film Academy, the drive-in was born to cater to individuals who found it challenging to fit into traditional movie theater seats and sought a more comfortable alternative. It was an innovative way for people to comfortably experience movies.
If you’ve never been or are seeking a fresh experience, head on over to The Drive-in this Valentine's Day. Bring along your coziest pillow, thickest blankets, favorite takeout, and candy, all in the hopes of experiencing a unique movie-watching adventure.

As the realm of dance beckons with possibilities, be it salsa, jazz, or (my personal favorite) the country two-step, there is no excuse. Of course, Practice Self- Care
On a day filled with love, it's crucial to extend that love to ourselves. If you prefer spending the day alone, that is perfectly great; indulge in activities like reading a book, preparing your favorite meal, applying a face mask, or watching a movie. Prioritize your mental health and self-care, and recognize that your path is unique and valid. Every individual has a distinct journey, so embrace yours. However you decide to spend the day, ensure it brings you joy.
On February 10th, Chapman Wellness and Recreation is hosting Valentine’s Pilates at 10:30am. You’re encouraged to register on Recportal, wear valentine’s colors, and indulge in the sweet surprise after the class!
